And in May of 1952 I married my wife: Vara JoAnne Casteel. We moved to Athens, Ga. and entered the University of Georgia. I worked in the university book store and Jo worked in the library. In June '54 I graduated from the Un. of Ga. I majored in English. Commissioned 2nd Lt. 7 June '54. First kid, Lew Jr. born: 2 June '54 and I reported in at Ft. Benning 21 June '54. Completed the Basic Infantry Officers Course. Assigned to Sand Hill and my first assignment was as Recon Platoon Leader. In '56, first and only daughter Karen was born. I completed "Jump & Jumpmaster school in '56. Transferred to Germany Sept. '56. Worked for 3 years in electronic intelligence. Army Security Agency, Europe. 2nd son, Robert, born in '59 and we returned to the states. Completed Advanced Infantry Officer Course December '59 and was assigned to the "Big Red One", 13th Inf. First Infantry Division, at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Made Captain in Aug. '60. In Oct. '61. I was in the 8th Infantry, and I saw a small paragraph in The Army Times telling of a need for advisors in Vietnam. Still under the influence of JFK's "Ask not what your country can do for you....." I promptly volunteered for Vietnam. I arrived "in country" on 1st of January,'62. I was assigned as Senior Advisor to 2nd Bn. 15th Independent ARVN Regt. stationed in Duc My, about 25 miles West of NhaTrang. I managed to get myself blown out into a rice paddy. I woke up with very little sense of balance. Our youngest son, Keith, was born in Moultrie, September '62. I was medically evacuated to a hospital located at Clark A.F.B. in the Philippines. Returned to Duc My in Oct. to complete my tour. Came back to "Land of the Big PX" in December of '62. I was assigned to Montgomery, Alabama as Adjutant of the regular army advisors to the Alabama National Guard. Tour lasted 4 & 1/2 years. I again volunteered for Vietnam. The Army sent me to Hawaii. In June '68 I was assigned to act as an assistant to General Westmoreland for a week. He was staying in Hawaii preparing for his becoming Chief-of Staff in Washington. On Friday,as he was departing, he asked if he could do anything for me. " I want to go back to Vietnam, Sir!" On Monday I received "vocal orders" and I was en route to 'Nam via the Ambassador's jet. I had the portion of the Central Highlands, centered on Ban My Tout in II Corp. Normally I had four Vietnamese battalions. I had Darlac province and a lesser known province to the South. The other two regimental Senior Advisors with the 23rd ARVN Inf. Div. were killed. Eventually I was evacuated through medical channels: 8th Field Hospital, then the 249th General Hospital near Tokyo and on to the large general hospital in Hawaii. I was a patient there for the better part of a year & my total "In hospital" time was 16 months. I picked up Jo and the kids and the Army moved us to Ft. Benning. I had a "Medical Board" at the military hospital in Augusta. They awarded me a 70% disability retirement. In August of '70 I was officially retired and and recieved the uasual bag of pretty medals and ribbons. We moved to Auburn, Alabama for 13 years and I entered the university as a "Secondary Education" major. Finished that and took all of the courses for "Elementary Education".
